MC Shortston Biography 2005

The life of MC Shortston has been a rollercoaster ride over the past few years, with the New Breed crew member confirming his status of one of the drum and bass scenes biggest talents.

Having finished as runner-up in 2003s Accelerated Culture award for best breakthrough MC, the south-east Londoner continues to spread his name thanks to numerous appearances at events across the UK, Europe and America.

Ive had many fond memories abroad, he says.

I especially love it when I play at One Nation in Germany because the atmosphere is so live that by the time you come off stage you are buzzing with excitement. Switzerland is another place I always love to go every time I step in Geneva its game on, they are totally up for it! In fact, most of Europe is live.

Appearances at every big rave in the UK have also featured heavily on Shorts schedule, with his unique lyrical style attracting a large fan base across the scene. This was crowned when Shorts was voted in second place at the equivalent of the drum and bass Oscars in 2003.

That in itself was an achievement for me, he remembers.

It meant that people believed in what I was doing and they showed that by casting a vote for me. Finishing just after my good friend Eksman was a bit of an honour as well - it put a lot of things into perspective for me.

Earlier that year, Shorts had also been chosen from a cast of many hopefuls to host the television advert for the Oxy Search for a DJ and MC, which was aired on all the MTV channels in the UK.

Surprisingly my bookings went up over that period of time, he says.

Which was something I couldnt work out because the advert had nothing to do with drum and bass. But whos complaining?!

But ripping up the mic and presenting are only the start of the recent developments of this MC. Last year, Shortston, long-time friend and New Breed partner Fatman D and Terminal State joined forces to create the Biological Beatz record label.

The first signed release from producers BFS The Stick Up and Dedication sold out and was featured in a double-page spread in Knowledge magazine. And with Fatman, Shorts, Rekless and in-demand producer Shodan having combined to form the production clique, Da Firm, with releases coming from them throughout 2005, it seems the future is not looking too glum for the man dem.

As if he wasnt busy enough, though, Shorts newest venture is equally as exciting. New company Full Hundred promotions was formed in summer 2004 with his long-time friend D, and they held their first event under the name Battle of the MCs at the Coronet in London at the end of the year.

It was a lot of hard work, but worth it in the long run. Now Im looking forward to planning the some more, he says.

As you can see the last couple of years have been mayhem for MC Shortston, but it wont stop there. Things can only get bigger and better Watch this space
