Weiss was born in Grottkau Germany and the son of Johann Jacob Weiss, also a lutenist.

A contemporary and also friend of J.S Bach's, Weiss is now regarded as one of the most important composers of the lute. Weiss wrote around 600 pieces for the lute, most of them grouped into 'sonatas'. Weiss also wrote chamber pieces and concertos, but sadly only the solo parts have survived.
