Mark Knopfler will re-release the North East anthem GOING HOME "Local Hero" and donate all royalties to the Great North Children's hospital's Future Fund, which supports children’s cancer research. The fund is currently aiming to raise £5.5m to establish the Newcastle University Center for Childhood Cancer.

Thursday Sep 4 the Bupa Great North Run "Opening Ceremony"

The Great North Run Million Opening Ceremony will light up the River Tyne at 8.30pm next Thursday, September 4, with a spectacular show full of music, fireworks and North East stars.

Great North Run founder, Brendan Foster said: “We’re absolutely delighted that the Great North Run theme tune is being re-released to help raise funds for this fantastic cause. “Mark has always been a great supporter of the event and it’s brilliant that over 30 years after its first release, this track is going to reach a new audience and help the Future Fund at the same time.”
Mark added: “I’m proud to have been a supporter of this great event from the beginning and am looking forward to being there to play ‘Local Hero’ once more on September 4 when the Bupa Great North Run gets ready to notch up its millionth finish.”
Mark will be joined on stage at the ceremony by fellow North East stars including Sting, Ant and Dec, Tim Healy, The Unthanks, David Almond and Jill Halfpenny as well as festival favourites Chase and Status and Lords of Lightning.
