Wissam Boustany (Flute): And The Wind Whispered - Video
PUBLISHED:  Oct 08, 2013
DESCRIPTION:
'...And The Wind Whispered...' (for solo flute)
dedicated to Shermine

As fluteplayers, our creative life is forever bound in the air we breathe and blow - this wonderful invisible resource that is the foundation of our Art.

I first performed '...And The Wind Whispered...' in Botswana and Zimbabwe, February 2009 - but it took until 2011 before it was written down. Taking its inspiration from the Wind, '...And The Wind Whispered...' seeks to make a statement about our fractured world...I have always been very weary of organized nationalism, religion and politics because they fragment and diminish our Humanity. At one point in my piece, I say "and the wind never shows its passport, when it crosses the border".
Sit back and let the wind take you on a journey of its own choosing. This piece carries a wish with it - that humanity can one day rid itself from its self-imposed spiritual prisons.

Performance Notes

'...And The Wind Whispered...' is deliberately written down in approximate notation. I give you some basic ideas, modes, melodies, sequences and atmospheres...but it is up to YOU to find your own timing, to establish your own flow and connection between the various episodes, creating a free, flowing and improvised feel for the piece. It will become clear that circular breathing is an important technique for this piece...but if you don't circular breathe please do find a way to make it work, I would be most interested to hear your way of rising to the challenge of creating a piece that can inspire.

Performed on 5th October 2013 at Chamber Music in Little Venice
St Mary's Church, Paddington Green, London
