Love him or hate him, Sting hires the best drummers in the world to play with him: Manu, Vinnie, Omar, Stewart... drummers we all know by first name alone. Manu is my favorite of all the Sting drummers, and the album "The Soul Cages" is mostly why. It features some of the best rock drumming I've ever heard. Many drummers have more chops, but Manu at his best sports a touch and delicacy that no other drummer can duplicate. (How many drummers can make a press roll work perfectly as a rock drum fill?) And he comes up with unique parts that fit the music so well.
This song is but one example of Manu's unique style. Also check out Robbie Robertson's "Somewhere Down the Crazy River," or better yet, that whole Robbie Robertson album from the mid 80's.
In this groove, I prefer to think of the snare drum as marking the "one" of every fast 6/8 measure....
