LUVVA J was born in The Yay Area, California (Hayward to be exact), was raised in Pacoima, California & Olympia, WA by his mother - a pop locker from Watts & Inglewood, CA who used to dance with Shabadoo (‘Ozone’ for doz who slept.).

Luvva J grew up in the gang culture of Los Angeles, but was fortunate to have been moved to the state of Washington by his mother at a young enough age to avoid getting caught up. In Washington, he and his sister were B-Boying/Girling at the young ages of five and seven respectively. They were involved with the TA Crew of Tacoma, WA in the early '80s and Luvva J learned to scratch with his mother's one Technic turntable in 1983 after purchasing his first albums: The Fat Boys (with "Jailhouse Rap" and all that) and a remix album called Let The Music Scratch. At an early age he was introduced to and embraced the lessons and philosophy of The Universal Zulu Nation.

Luvva J indulged himself in the culture of Hip-Hop and was familiar with the mighty Zulu Nation at a young age. Embracing himself and his Hip-Hop culture was reinforced by his mother and family who knew that Hip-Hop was a source of inspiration, courage and confidence for young people of color especially in the '80s when mainstream U.S. culture largely dismissed the culture of Hip-Hop.

Luvva J began djaying/broadcasting on the radio in 1989 with veteran/pioneer radio personality, Nancy G as his role model at KAOS 89.3 FM in Olympia, WA. He was twelve years old at this time. He had listened and admired the sultry and strong voiced female since 1988 as she broadcast EVERYTHING that was ANYTHING during this golden era of Hip-Hop. To this day he honors Nancy G on all of his radio/television broadcasts! She's the woman! Nancy G was also a pioneer and source of support for legends like DJ B-Mello and she broke albums by Sir Mix-A-Lot and Criminal Nation (Pacific Northwest Hip-Hop pioneers).

Luvva J began working in the media as a writer, producer, director and host of projects. Luvva J continued to work in radio @ KAOS, KZUU, KUOI, KUOW, KBBY, Fisher Radio, KAHB, CFBT (The Beat 94.5 FM), CPSD and CPSM amongst other stations.

Luvva J attended Washington State University as the first person in his immediate family to attend a University. He would graduate with a Triple Major in Communications (Media/Film Production, Media Management and Broadcast Journalism), a Triple Minor (Spanish, Business and Comparative American Cultures) and his Masters Degree in Education (with a Teaching Certificate). Luvva J taught GED preparation courses for Native American communities and children and elders of migrant workers. Luvva J also designed and instructed leadership, accountability and self-improvement education programs for incarcerated individuals and works with Jim Brown's Amer-I-Can program, Gateways for Incarcerated Youth and Free Ya Mind, Incorporated. He would later teach fifth grade before serving the public sector.

Luvva J is currenlty completing his Joint Masters Degree in Environmental Science and Public Administration (Project Management/Leadership/Diversity/Media) at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA. Luvva J has studied business, criminology, & restorative justice at Eastern Washington University, The Lincoln Institute, The Maynard Institute and Western Washington University all the while traveling, working and creating results as a DJ, Artist, Writer, Producer/Director, Consultant and Speaker.

While furthering his educational goals, LUVVA J is working with Canadian MC Battle Champ Langdon Auger, to complete their B.O.B.B.I. (Best Of Both Borders International) project and he is completing his debut, It’s Gon’ Cost Ya. Luvva J has toured and performed with WC, Too Short, Lloyd Banks, Andre Nickatina, Mac Dre (RIP), DJ Quik, Afrika Bambaataa, Suga Free, Ice Cube, Tha Alkaholiks, Westside Connection, Spice 1 and more. Luvva J has appeared in the film/documentary THE GIFT (www.andrenickatina.com) as the co-producer/writer and featured interviewer.

Luvva J can be heard on-air each Friday at 3pm (Pacific) at KAOS 89.3 FM (www.kaosradio.org) on his Live From I-5 Radio Show that was established in 1989…
