After two critically acclaimed records, Luis Francesco Arena comes back to us with a third album.
This time, Luis’ has enriched his musical world with drums, piano and various experimentations such as sampling and human beat box, which all add to the songwriter’s vocabulary while extending his musical terrain (Red Handed). When listening to his melodies, one thinks of Nick Drake, Ken Stringellow and even the Beatles (Black Lemonade).
His lyrics are subtle and poetical, leading to a rich universe, peopled by strange animals, childhood memories and the ups and downs of Luis’ world.
On stage, Luis Francesco Arena mesmerizes with his amazing vocals and guitar skills, both perfectly matched by the violin and cello.
After numerous tours and many fruitful encounters, Luis Francesco Arena was noticed by John Congleton (Paperchase…) who decided to produce his album. It was finally recorded at the Elecrtical Studio in Chicago by Steve Albini in February 2009.

A 15 ans il monte Headcases, un trio rock sous l'in uence de groupes américains
comme Nirvana, Fugazi ou Jesus Lizard. Le jeune chanteur guitariste découvre les
studios et les scènes en France et à l'étranger. Après 10 ans de tournée et 4 albums, le
groupe se sépare.
Dès 2000, Pierre Louis s'intéresse à des artistes au registre plus folk comme Andrew
Bird, Nick Drake, Elvis Costello ou Leonard Cohen. Il compose de plus en plus de titres
qui n'entrent pas dans le vocabulaire noise rock d'Headcases.
En parallèle de son groupe, il créé en 2005 Luis Francesco Arena et sort un premier
album éponyme, qui reçoit d'emblée un bon accueil des critiques, entre autres le titre
"Nation is Wrong", son premier single.
Dès les premiers concerts, il est repéré par plusieurs labels et choisit Fiatlux Records,
un petit label dirigé par Emmanuel Cholet, un ancien de Virgin qui craque littéralement
sur les compos folk de Pierre Louis.
Les tournées de Luis Francesco Arena s'enchaînent partout (Angleterre, Ecosse, Etats
Unis, Irlande, Suisse, Luxembourg, Belgique, Norvège…) ainsi que les premières parties
(Andrew Bird, Elysian Field, Daniel Darc, Troy von Balthazar, Syd Matters, Moriarty,
Souad Massi, Chris Garneau…).
Pierre Louis fait notamment la rencontre de Ken Stringfellow (The Posies, REM, Big
Star) avec qui il sort un EP en 2006.
En 2007, un second album voit le jour, "Porcelain Tandem", titre du duo avec Jehn
(John & Jehn) présent sur l'album ainsi qu'une reprise inattendue et remarquable de
"Help" des Beatles et le single "Under Red Lights".
Cette année Luis Francesco Arena nous revient avec un troisième album, "Chess in
the Abyss".
L'univers musical s'éto e cette fois de percussions, de piano et d'expérimentations
diverses comme les samples et la human beat box, élargissant le vocabulaire du
songwriter, qui s'aventure sur de nouveaux terrains ("Red Handed"). A l'écoute des
mélodies, on pense à Nick Drake et même aux Beatles ("Black Lemonade").
L'album a été réalisé et enregistré par John Congleton (Paperchase .) à l'Electrical
studio de Steve Albini à Chicago en février 2009.
Sur scène, Luis Francesco Arena est accompagné cette fois d'un groupe (batterie,
violon, violoncelle basse et claviers), une formule plus adaptée aux nouvelles composi-
tions.
Une tournée se prépare pour la sortie physique de l'album le 26 janvier 2010.
