Sarah Brown is a widely recognized and award winning bassist in the international blues and roots music scene living in Austin, TX, and a member of the Austin Music Awards Hall of Fame. Starting her career in the 70’s, it only took three gigs for her to realize that playing bass was what she was meant to do.

Not long after buying her first bass guitar at an Ann Arbor MI pawnshop, Sarah began backing up a virtual “Who’s Who” of blues legends such as Big Walter Horton and Johnny Shines. Later, in Boston and Austin, she added Otis Rush, Buddy Guy and Albert Collins to the long list of artists she supported on bass. During the 80's and 90's Sarah was part of the famed house band at Antone's—the blues "Mecca" of Austin. She appears on many live and studio recordings from the Antone’s days, as well as being interviewed in the feature length documentary Antone’s: Home of the Blues, released in 2006 on DVD. The film also features blistering footage of her playing with Buddy Guy, among others.

On tour and in the studio, Sarah has added her rhythmic punch to the music of Americana, country and rockabilly artists such as Dave Alvin, Rosie Flores, Bill Kirchen, Jim Lauderdale and Wanda Jackson.

Expanding her musical territory, Sarah toured and recorded with British rockers Paul Carrack and Ian McLagan, and appeared on the long-running PBS show “Austin City Limits”, backing one-of-a-kind songwriter Billy Bragg.

She was voted best bass player in the Austin Music Polls four years running as well as winning another AMP award for a 45rpm release. She is the recipient of five Music City Texas awards, was nominated for two W.C. Handy awards, received a NAIRD Indie Award, and was featured in Bass Player magazine. Most recently she was inducted into the Austin Music Hall of Fame.

Sarah appears on over 50 recordings, including her own CD on the Blind Pig label, “Sayin’ What I’m Thinkin’” on which she wrote all the material but one cut.

As a songwriter, her songs have been covered by such notables as R&B legend Ruth Brown and New Orleans star Irma Thomas, as well as Marcia Ball, Joe Louis Walker, Rosie Flores, Bill Kirchen and Laurie Lewis.

Sarah stays busy performing as a member of the Texas Guitar Women (featuring Sue Foley, Cindy Cashdollar, Carolyn Wonderland and Lisa Pankratz) touring concert halls in Texas, Louisiana and Ohio. She also regularly performs with Bill Kirchen, the Lucky Tomblin Band, and other local Austin luminaries. She recently added her bass work to A Man of Somebody's Dreams: A Tribute to the Songs of Chris Gaffney [Yep Rock],a project that features cuts by Los Lobos, Dave Alvin, Joe Ely, Calexico and others. Her musicianship and songwriting skills are also featured on the upcoming Yep Rock release by Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women, with tours lined up for the summer of 2009.
