Sonata Arctica es una banda de origen finlandés surgida en el año 1996 bajo el nombre Tricky Means, el cual fue cambiado en 1999 por el que aún conserva, la banda se encuentra actualmente integrada por Tony Kakko (voz principal, guitarra acústica y teclado), Tommy Portimo (batería), Marko Paasikoski (bajo, guitarra acústica y segundas voces), Henrik Klingenberg (teclados y segundas voces), Elias Viljanen (guitarras y segundas voces). La banda posee siete álbumes de estudio y éstos son: Ecliptica 1999, Silence 2001, Winterheart's Guild 2003, Reckoning Night 2004, Unia 2007, The Days Of Grays 2009, Stones grow her name 2012; con otros tres álbumes en vivo los cuales son: Songs Of Silence 2002, For The Sake Of Revenge 2006, Live In Finland 2011. También poseen EP y recopilaciones, en su repertorio también se puede encontrar algunos singles y covers. Su estilo es el Power Metal, se caracterizan por sus potentes solos de guitarra acompañados con un impecable teclado y una voz limpia, la línea melódica es muy definida, por lo tanto la banda encaja perfectamente en el power metal melódico. En muchas ocasiones sus álbumes se han visto impregnados con orquestas sinfónicas y coros lo cual hace de su música algo más épico.
