DESCRIPTION: On May 23, Franz Welser-Möst leads The Cleveland Orchestra in a performance of the New York premiere of Kaija Saariaho's "Laterna magica."
Here, Carnegie Hall's 2011-2012 composer-in-residence explains how filmmaker Ingmar Bergman's autobiography provided the inspiration for the piece. Saariaho also shares how the iconic Swedish director's belief that the human soul was a "damp red thing" was inspirational for core elements of this composition.
