Music has always been a passion to this young hard working native of West
Philadelphia. Born in Stratford, New Jersey, but living most of her life in
Sickerville, New Jersey and West Philadelphia, her story can become
inclusive to growing up a young inspired musician. Playing two instruments
and playing basketball, was her way away from the streets. Alexis Dominique
Jones was born October 29, 1985. However, she wasn't born with a silver
spoon in her mouth. Her childhood was tough, being raised by her
grandparents, Alexis credits her entire family for their on-going
motivation and being her biggest fans. Starting her music career as a
singer, she saw her cousin rapping one day and was inspired to do the same.
She began to rap at the age of 15. Her lyrics are viewed as empowering and
powerful for woman.
Alexis D. Jones, better known in the hip hop world as Lex Dime, continues
to be an advocate and role model for those inspiring woman in the music
industry. From the under ground battles on the streets of West
Philadelphia, Lex Dime continues to use her music as a product of
encouragement, influence and to bring out a message to those who listen.
Now a graduated of, Livingstone College in Salisbury, NC she continues to
promote her music with the distribution of three mix tapes, Paragon,
Paragon Fully Loaded and Back to the future, 80s Baby. All three being sold
out. She is also an illustrious lady of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority
Incorporated, Spring 2007.
The Paragon used many diverse beats and brought forth a more hard core
approach to the rap game. Her woman empowered verses would help encourage
other female rappers to step their game up. Her second mix tape, Paragon
Fully Loaded, brought a more versatile and lyrical Lex Dime to the stage.
With her remix verses of pre recorded songs, and her acapella track, shows
her skill as a lyricist. Back to the future, 80's Baby, going back to when
hip hop was at its prime, Lex Dime used beats from the 80s, 90s and the new
millennium to bring forth a softer side of these Perfect ten
collaborations. Recently, she took her lyrical style to record a track
along with Cassey June entitled "Take Control". This song was brought to
encourage and educated those about their sexual behaviors and awareness.
Each mix tape shows how versatile Lex Dime is. Her last mix tape, “Back to
the future, 80's Baby" brought a more commercial Lex Dime to the stage. For
the sake of versatility, Alexis continued to send a message in her music.
Her style is street but sophiscated, classy and laid back. Lex Dime
embarrasses her truth in every bar that is spit. The uniqueness of Alexis
is she knows how to market herself. Doing shows from Charlotte, NC to
Philadelphia, she branches her music to all those willing to listen.
Lex Dime has been gone for over two and a half years, but is now back to
bring original favor on her newest CD, Str8 Dime hosted by MC Lyte. Lex
Dime is bringing a more mature sound along with her graduated look of
success. While her son, Tayron Jones Forth was born March 11th 2008, she
never gave up on the love of hiphop and she is back to show the world. This
CD includes original tracks and songs “titled, Drop it, Nite Life, and
climbing.” This are songs from the heart that express things she’s been
through seen her last Mix Tape Back to the future 80s baby.
When did Lex Dime fall in love with hip hop? During the dynamic era of MC
Lyte, Salt and Pepa, Queen Latiyah and many more, she would sit in her room
and listen to her uncle D.J. in the house. As he found ways to cut each
record and rock the house, she realized the freedom and the form of
expression within herself. Furthermore, leading into a passion for music,
Lex Dime uses her lyrical talent as a form of her own expression and to
become a motivational speaker. The love she has for hip hop is
unconditional.
Music is a brilliant and dynamic way to express how one feels. Taking your
music and using it as a tool to empower, innovate, educate, and entertain
are all qualities of Lex Dime's craft and style. It has recently been
declared that "hip hop is dead". How can hip hop be dead if there are
motivating lyricist likes Lex Dime? Similarly to the legendary, Queen
Latiyah and MC Lyte, Lex Dime is very adaptable and multitalented. She is a
spokeswoman in her own right. Writing her story in every song, Lex Dime
finds it important to prove that hip hop is far from dead.
