COLAB - SONGS IN THE KEY - Space and Place (2013) HD - Video
PUBLISHED:  Aug 27, 2012
DESCRIPTION:
A love letter to home towns, and in this case the home town is pre earthquake Christchurch, NZ.
Space and Place was originally about returning home after a long period of OE in a distant land, and later emerging from a cold CHCH winter to the familiar beauty of the city. Streets of common ground, a place that knows you as well as you know it.
The song was written before the February 22nd Earthquake and this video was shot before the city was badly damaged. It beautifully captures many of the features that made the city iconic including Cathedral Square, The Press Building, The Roman Catholic Cathedral, Bridge of Remembrance, Colombo Street etc etc.
The song and its lyrics are even more potent, poignant, and unexpectedly prescient post quake, as the song becomes a love letter to something we all lost.

Songs in The Key is a collaborative project based around Producer Engineer Rob Mayes and a selection of talented musicians who worked together under a series of rules to create new musical works.
The Rules for this session were the artists had 2 hours to compose an original work based around a theme. This album's theme was 'Slow" hence the album title is "Songs in the Key of Slow".
The first single from this album is Space and Place and was composed and recorded by Leigh Franklin (Guitar and Vocals) Mark Roberts (Guitar and Vocals), Rob Mayes (Bass Strings, Brass, production) And Steve Birss, (Drums).

Release date 22nd Feb 2013

Space and Place (Franklin, Mayes, Roberts)

Space and place subside,
and you know me well.
Streets of common ground
I remember, I remember

Space and grace subside,
and walls begin to melt
Safe forgotten sounds
I remember I remember

Don't make a sound,
when I'm breaking.
Well I'm trying
The same grey lines
Look at me
Waiting for their chance
Walk over the same steps
I'm making it up
Yeah I'm making it up
Think of when we last met
There's beauty

Here the concrete elevations
and the wire mesh canopies
Tell tales of possibility,
and shelter our memories
The dust has settled in
Suspended in mid air
Quietly refracting the tender summer glare
There's hope in your eyes as we buoyantly stride
From one street to another
Like a river in summer
Like the urbanite lovers we are

Space and place subside
and you know me well.
Streets of common ground
I remember, I remember
space and grace subside
and walls begin to melt
safe forgotten sounds
I remember I remember
