# SANBA ZAO is a Haitian master drummer, considered an "asogwè" at the sacred sites of Lakou Souvnance and Lakou Badjo, the traditional meccas of performance of Haiti's Vodou repertoire. Forming the group Sanba Yo, The Sanba-s, Louis Lesly Marcelin initiated the instrumental subculture of the Sanba Movement. Pioneering a style of mizik rasin, "roots music," Sanba Zao brought ritual music into dialogue with currents of jazz and funk. On guitar, he draws his influence from Wes Montgomery's right-thumb strumming and left-handed wizardry based in mostly pentatonic scales with complex harmonies. With his voice, as a leading voice of the Sanba-s, he draws on the qualities of Al Jarreau, from whom he takes his title "Sanba Zao." "Zao" is a Haitian lwa (spirit) and also a play on the pronunciation of "Jarreau" or "Zow" for English speakers. After forming groups like Djakata, Sanba Yo, and Simbi Yo, Marcelin remains a Professor of Music at ENARTS (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) and oversees Lèkol Bazilo Communautaire with his wife Mirielle, his children Adjamile, Bendja, and Woulele, and his grandson Cleo.

# Since Kriz Rara formed in July 2013, they've been taking over the streets of Little Haiti every Saturday night. Their recent carnival hit "Ke Yo Sote" captures the energy and intelligence of the group. Back in 1990, Boukman Eksperyans "Kè'm pa Sote" challenged the military government by letting them know, "My heart doesn't leap, I am not afraid." Instead, Kriz Rara makes everyone's heart leap by narrating Haiti's current circumstances as one in crisis. Understanding the cultural "kriz," the crisis of rara music, the band picks up the graj, the kònet, tambou, in order to channel "Kilti Rasin Istwa Zansèt yo" - the Culture, Roots, and History of the Ancestors in Miami.

# DJ Tall Jamal is a PhD student in Ethnomusicology focusing on Hatian roots music. A graduate of the University of Miami's Musicology program, he hosts Lakou Miami - Sundays at Noon on Mizikpam.com and DJs in exile in Vancouver and New York.
