Follow me underwater until the searchlights leave the shore.
Follow me underwater until we find what we're looking for.
Plastic oceans, plastic farms
Cover your footprints like a bandaid on a broken arm.
They found the pipeline through the soul in the soil.
I thought this place never changed
But now the reefs are bleeding swells of oil
And the forests are up in flames.
You fell asleep. You fell asleep while your bed burned.
Give me a reason.
Tell me why we lost our reason.
Tell me the truth, not an excuse.
'Cause we have everything to lose.
Plastic oceans, plastic farms
Cover your footprints like a bandaid on a broken arm.
There's a cancer in our lifeblood.
So silently it grew.
The streams of least resistance
Poison me and poison you.
There's a virus in the air
That drags the wind out from my chest.
I don't see a way out.
All I see is a sphere of unrest.
Show me a way out.
Follow me underwater until the searchlights leave the shore.
Follow me underwater until we find what we're looking for.
Plastic oceans, plastic farms
Cover your footprints like a bandaid on a broken arm.
You fell asleep. You fell asleep while your bed burned.

"We don’t inherit the earth from our parents, we borrow it from our children. Environmental preservation has always been something that’s important to me, but it only hit home in recent years from my travels just how dire of a state the world is in and how little our politicians are doing to stem the problem. I’ve been criticised for the lyrics to this song being on the simple side for Northlane, but that was intentional. It’s lyrically simple because I wanted it to be easy to understand because to me there aren’t many messages of higher importance than this one.
It really sunk in when I went on a trip to New Zealand last year with my partner. We travelled around the south island and visited a place called Aoraki and did a hike to the Fox Glacier. I’d seen pictures of this glacier before, I wasn’t prepared to see a lake with a few icebergs floating around in it. The Glaciers of New Zealand are deteriorating so fast due to global warming that the maps in these parks have to be constantly updated. How insane is that? when a feature that’s been around for thousands and thousands of years all but disappears in only a few. When you compare what it looks like now to only 25 years ago it’s hard to recognise the same landmarks. And this is only a small piece of what’s going on, I could write for days about it and still not cover all that I’ve seen with my own eyes.
As an Australian it saddens me that those in power have done so little for preservation when we pride ourselves on being so connected to the Earth. Our government’s approach to the problem is laughable. Even some key politicians once active in preservation no longer make an issue of it. This is just the tip of the iceberg of a global problem. If the earth dies, we die with it, along with the half of the world’s species that we haven’t killed off yet. We can’t afford to to be taking half-measures for our contribution to environmental preservation when our entire existence rests upon it’s wellbeing. And that’s why I felt obliged to write this song."
