Mike Vernon - War Paints - Video
PUBLISHED:  Apr 23, 2017
DESCRIPTION:
Mention the name of Mike Vernon to any fan of blues, and you can be sure that it will not be long before the fan speaks of the names of classic records as a producer during the British blues boom of the late 60's. Mike Vernon was the main producer of the British blues boom in the late 1960s, working on John Mayall, Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack, Duster Bennett, Savoy Brown and Ten Years After records. Several of these recordings came out on Vernon's own Blue Horizon label, as well as the lesser-known Vernon labels -run, Purdah and Outasite, and Vernon also recorded some American artists for their companies. This was a time when blues records were not very easily available, especially in Britain, and Vernon deserves much credit for raising the profile of music in general in the UK. In 1971, Vernon decided to try his hand on the other side of the console, as a musician. "Bring It Back Home" is his debut album, in which he tries his hand as a singer, guitarist, bassist and composer (most tracks are his own, some covers). On the album he performed with excellent musicians such as Rory Gallagher, Paul Butler, Laurence Garman, Richie Hayward, Paul Kossoff, Kenny Lamb, Dick Parry, Jimmy Reed and Pete Wingfield. The album stylistically, of course, is maintained in blues climates. Unfortunately, it was not suitable for such a delicate thin voice, Vernon's. Mike Vernon's merits as a manufacturer can not be underestimated, but as a musician, he did not have much to offer. Over the next few decades, Vernon has maintained an active profile as a producer, although he has not produced albums with commercial or artistic impact. I have revived the Blue Horizon label in the late 1980s, and in the 1990s I created a pair of other blue labels, Indigo and Code Blue. In 2010, he produced an album for the Blues prodigy Oli Brown, and occasionally lends a hand in producing new talent, but is essentially, and deservedly, 'resting on his laurels' as a great champion of British Blues. Check out the track War Paints is a very pleasant blues to listen to.
