Solo Tabla - Larry Thrasher - Tabla Journal 2-22-08 - Video
PUBLISHED:  Feb 27, 2008
DESCRIPTION:
Solo tabla by Larry Thrasher of Psychic TV. More Alcatraz Ghrana style playing. The playing here is just basic TRKT pattern used to warm up and get the left hand balanced out with the left.

Drum notes:
The drum is my favorite drum at the time. A majestic custom ordered Jaganath Das drum from Kolkata. This is Swapan Chaudhuri's drum maker. Its an octave lower than normal tabla. Tuned at C. I love these big drums. I have huge hands and so they suit me well. This gives a pakhawaj like sound. It's a huge tabla measuring 7.5 inches. The duggi is also very special. Made by my tabla wala, Datta, in Ahmednagar. It's solid brass weighing almost two kilo. This duggi has a lovely bell ring to its bottom. It likes being tuned up higher but I have it low to accommodate the the low tabla.

tech notes:
GS500-FCP-Motion-QTpro using Mpeg-4
With this video I shot with the Panasonic GS500 using the internal microphone. Ingested into a macbook with FCP. Edited on FCP. No treatment to the audio what so ever. The camera in this position with no audio sweetening leaves a pretty tubby sound. Not exactly desirable. Under normal circumstances I would import the audio into Pro Tools and EQ it. In later productions I will be using external microphones to give the comparison.

After making some simple edits in FCP I exproted it as high res (DV25) QT movie. This left me with a pretty large 700mb range. Then I imported that into Motion. Added the water marking and titles and exported as high res (DV25) Mpeg-4. Then imported that file into QT pro and exported as highly compressed Mpeg-4 QT. Notice the compression artifacting at the head. This is a bug in this Apple workflow. I have no idea where it got introduced as I was just trying to work as fast as I could and not watching the video between stages.
