Best of Sahana Bajpaie | Rabindra Sangeet | Love Songs of Rabindranath Tagore - Video
PUBLISHED:  Oct 07, 2015
DESCRIPTION:
Sahana Bajpaie is one of the most popular and cherished Rabindra Sangeet artists from the recent times. Sahana Bajpaie’s interpretations and renditions of various Rabindra Sangeet are considered truly path breaking as far as Bengali Modern Songs are concerned. Her lucid and melodious voice comes as a breath of fresh air.

Sahana Bajpaie became a name in Tagore songs especially popular with the young listeners after her album “Notun Kore Pabo Bole” a collection of Rabindra Sangeet, came out in 2007. This album “Ja Bolo Tai Bolo” has Twelve Tagore songs. Three were arranged by classical guitarist Oliver Weeks, Jazz Pianist Zoe Rahman and Jazz Clarinetist Idris Rahman and was recorded in London and Amazon. One song has been arranged by the famous composer from Kolkata Prabuddha Banerjee. The rest of the songs are arranged by the brilliant young singer-songwriter and composer and Sahana’s long-time bandmate Samantak Sinha. Sahana, who was named by her father after the Rabindra Sangeet singer of the olden days Sahana Devi, was brought up in Santiniketan, West Bengal, India and started taking music lessons from her father Prof. Bimal Bajpaie, a Tagore scholar at a tender age. Sahana is a trained Rabindra Sangeet singer as well as an Indian Classical vocalist. Her grasp and fluency in the genre of Rabindra Sangeet is unquestionable. Her knowledge of Hindustani Classical Music has enriched it even more. Still it is the honesty and the simplicity of Bajpaie’s lucid renditions that touches the listener the most. Sahana is a fan of organic forms or root forms of music and is of the opinion that “The key test of music is whether it resonates. Do the effects linger long after the performance is over? If fusion is used, it should be because the music demands it. The fusion should feel organic.”

This album “Ja Bolo Tai Bolo” came out in September 2015 from the Inreco label of Major 7th Music. Three of the songs in this album were arranged by three musicians from London. There’s an innate darkness in the song Kar Milono Chao Birohee. In the album, the song is accompanied by piano and clarinet; one can hear a hint of jazz clearly in this one. Kee Gaabo Ami is framed by just a piano and an English flute. O Je mane Na Mana is another brilliant rendition bound to win over hearts. Especially the use of a Blue Grass Mandolin is sheer out of the box thinking and deserves a pat. Overall this new album of Sahana Bajpaie is a masterpiece and a milestone in the history of Rabindra Sangeet. One might happily recall the legendary Debabrata Biswas who was a visionary and one of the pioneers who reshaped the expressions and instrumentations in Rabindra Sangeet. Sahana Bajpaie’s work only reflects and strengthens the legend’s vision. This one is a treat for all. A must listen.
