"Surf City" is a surf song written by Jan Berry (1941–2004) and Brian Wilson (b. 1942), which, as recorded by Jan and Dean, was a #1 hit record in July 1963 for two weeks.
The first draft of the song, with the working title "Goody Connie Won't You Come Back Home", was written by Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys. He gave it to Jan Berry and Dean Torrence of 'Jan and Dean' who finished writing and recording it with Wilson in the early 1960s. Although Torrence contributed several phrases to the song, he never insisted that he be given writing credit."Surf City" became the first surf song to reach number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1963. The song also crossed to #3 on Billboard's R&B charts.
In 1991, after moving to Huntington Beach, California, Torrence helped convince elected officials that the town be officially nicknamed "Surf City". As of 2009, more than 65 businesses in the city included "Surf City" as part of their name.
Jan and Dean were a rock and roll duo, popular from the late 1950s through the mid 1960s, consisting of William Jan Berry (April 3, 1941 – March 26, 2004) and Dean Ormsby Torrence (born March 10, 1940). They were pioneers of the vocal "surf music" craze that was popularized by The Beach Boys. Among their most successful songs was "Surf City", which topped both the Billboard and Cashbox music charts in June 1963; "Drag City", which was a No. 10 hit on both the Billboard and Cashbox charts in 1963; and their song "The Little Old Lady from Pasadena", which peaked at No. 3. "Dead Man's Curve", which reached No. 8 on the Billboard charts in 1964, was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008.
Jan Berry, the creative force behind the surf-rock died after suffering a seizure at his home in Los Angeles, he was sixty-two. The singer had endured various health problems ever since a 1966 car accident left him with brain damage.
