Birdkids – TOPOLOGY is a new EP-series showcasing raw talent by Birdkids. TOPOLOGY the series is a study of invariant, timeless qualities and emotions unaltered by deformation. Each EP represents an Artist’s examination of a specific subject-matter in an unflinching, blunt manner. Birdkids presents TOPOLOGY – vol.1 (BK005) – Christian M – Psycomantis EP Christan Marciani aka Christian M has been drawn to the world of Techno Music from the tender age of 13, vividly recalling his earliest Clubbing experiences in Rome that would mark him for his entire life.

Christian started honing his DJ skills as soon as opportunity arose in the form of two Turntables and a mixer at a friends place. Seeing as this passion took over his entire life Christian’s Mother decided to nurture and encourage the obviously gifted youngster’s musical abilities in the form of 2 decks and a mixer to call his own. From then on Christian M was on fire, gaining both reputation as a fantastic DJ, praise from colleagues for his powerful yet subtly musical way and a number of residencies – playing ever larger and prestigious venues. It was only natural for Christian to expand his abilities behind the decks to the studio, though a fairly recent transition one can immediately sense a Techno veteran well versed in the ways of foundation, build-up and perfect balance between that elusive element of “soul” and machine induced rhythm.

Psycomantis The title track – terrifying even by Christian’s standards throws down a gauntlet of pounding drums, eerie reversed vocals and frantic bleeps plunging into a deranged sea of trance-like vowel-chords cranking up the suspense, sitting atop the naked, atmospheric foundation. The subtleties underline the brute force: distorted reverbed bass, splotches of melody and frantic chirping further heighten the unsettling effect of being devoured by a giant psychotic Mantis while unable to stop convulsing on the dance floor underlining just how invaluable simple, strong production values can be.

The Mentalist Highlights Christian’s penchant for imbuing hard-edged Techno minimalism with intricate sound design. An all-encompassing kick drum paves the way for industrial deep filtered brass chords accentuated by acid lunges and disturbing animal-like noises intertwined with a female vocal snippet create a distinct sense of space. Pitch-black percussion engulfing the void after every perfectly orchestrated break, rave sirens, frantic chords, 909-open-Hats only getting more ferocious with each passing second, silvery hi-hats counting down the seconds to dancefloor bliss.

Killbeat Is about as minimal as Christian gets—an enormous, techno kick drum overlaid with a dubby synth chord, a huge one-note bass pulsating maliciously in the dark. It’s all in the details though: the piercing Jericho pad like something out of Godzilla movie, chugging Hi-hats, syncopated noise, single-pitched pads. Perfect balance between confrontational minimalism and pure body music.

Dark Voice Leading with a distorted, filtered, vocal snippet, rumbling bass and an unsettling high-pitched string note, the track immediately invokes an air of dramatic tension. Basic Channel-esque dub chords, Metallic Snares, Berghainian Hi-hats and shuffled shakers underline this apocalyptic stomp over which bursts of noise build-up to erupt in a frenzy of primal bass and syncopated juggling percussion. What a compelling voice indeed!
