Kate Young is a fiddler, singer and composer from Scotland, and has recently gained a First-Class Honours degree from Newcastle University's BMus Folk and Traditional Music course. Kate won the Clews Prize for Best Recital Performance for her end-of-degree recital. She composes music ranging from folk-style songs to instrumental ensemble work. Kate is the current winner of the Alan Hull Award 2009 for Songwriting and Composing. A recent composing project, commissioned by New Writing North comprised of a collaboration with Text-based Poet, Ira Lightman in the Folken Word Commission. As a fiddle-singer experimenting with tangible boundries, styles and traditions, she has performed with Eliza Carthy and Bella Hardy in concert. Kate is also part of the extraordinary world music band, Ethno in Transit who have toured across Europe performing traditional and folk musics from the different countries they represent.
