1970s reissue by Mercury. Complex history: The original was released in 1962 on the SMASH album MGS 27021 "Alley Cat/Green Onions -- Bill Justis Plays 12 Big Instrumental Hits". It was then re-released as a single after Mercury bought the Smash catalogue - which means that there is not an earlier 45 out.
Hands down, Booker T's original is the best version. But Bill Justis proves to be a contender for a nice (and rare) alternative. The flip, "Alley Cat" is the usual honky-tonk piano instrumental.
