Review Joseph Swidenbank – Scattered (review written by Andrew Smith - 16th April 2010)

So maybe here’s a first, a band that takes its name from the singer songwriter who fronts it. This band is the best of eighties rock revisited, from Punk to big Rock Ballads, from blues to rock instrumental music, this album really does deliver! Joseph Swidenbank the lead vocalist, not the band has a singing voice whose delivery reminds the listener of Paul Weller and some of the music on this album is reminiscent of Weller’s band The Jam.

“Back Home” is a great opening track, which gives you a flavour of what to expect. It has a danceable punk sound and the raunchy guitar makes the track memorable. The only cover on the album is the classic early 80’s Joe Jackson song “Different For Girls” which displays the bands ability to perform a well known melodic hit and yet make it into their own by giving it a rock ballad sound.

“Whenever” is a gentler song, but when it seems it’s over there is an unexpected rock refrain. I think this song more than any other defines what Joseph Swidenbank, the band are all about; this for me is typical of their sound. “Coming Up For Air” is a great and well written song and the passion of the vocal is outstanding and is one of my two favourite songs on the album.

“I’ve Just Got To” is a story song, so sad because of the girl’s need of rescue and yet so thrilling because of the willingness of the band to go and help her. It’s a song for the girls! It was at this point I realized that not only is this is a bloke’s band, but that the girls are going to love them too. Something for everyone, great music and good looking guys, no wonder their My Space has already attracted over 28,000 fans and well over 100,000 profile views!

“Silver Lining” is another different type of song, with the electronic sounding vocals further back in the mix, very bluesy. “The End” is an instrumental that displays the bands great musical ability, the guitar work on this track is amazing!

“Scattered” the title track is a bass led heavy progressive rock song, more reminiscent of the early 1970’s than the eighties, its the one for the guys! Took me back to the days when I first discovered Led Zepplin and Hawkwind, the towering vocals are wonderful! “Empty Handed” probably my favourite song on the album, displays the bands versatility as we return to melodic rock; lyrically outstanding!

“Avalanche” has excellent guitar work and vocals on it, whilst “Better On Your Own” brings the collection of songs to poignant close, the album has nothing missing!

Joseph Swidenbank the band, has created an album that shows off their musical capabilities and the sooner they are touring the UK and beyond promoting their new album the better. This is a wonderful collection of rock songs written by Joseph Swidenbank the singer, and performed by a musically tight band, congratulations to all involved.

REVIEW

SCATTERED by JOSEPH SWIDENBANK

Joseph Swidenbank are every girls dream - cute boys that play beautiful, melodic rock music. This album is crammed with songs that will melt the hearts of even the harshest of critics.

Scattered draws you in with the energetic sounds of Back Home, whose hypnotic beats leave you itching for more. The following doesn’t disappoint. Their cover of Joe Jackson’s Different For Girls is genius. They capture the heartbreak and perplexity of the song perfectly.

Whenever is the anthem of the album as well as the bands way of saying ‘bollocks’ to anyone that doesn’t quite get them. The upbeat pace continues with Coming up for air. It is without doubt the stand out track on Scattered. Best served blasting out of your car stereo, on a hot summer’s day with the wind gushing through your hair.

Following this is the bittersweet I’ve Just Got To. The boys tell a tragic story of a girl lost – just waiting to be rescued. Bearing their sensitive side works for them as it also paints them as the delicious knights in shining armour. Who wouldn’t want to be rescued by these lovely lads?

Silver lining has a blues vibe to it, taking the album off in another direction, showing that there are more than pretty pop melodies lurking in Joseph Swidenbank. This theory is backed up with the instrumental The End. The guitar work is their one minute of unashamed showmanship. However it works because with talent like that, who wouldn’t want to stand up and scream, ‘Hey, look at me, look at what I can do using only this guitar!’

The title track Scattered is the most rock ‘n’ roll on the album. Its funky rhythms and electric vocals will assuredly make this a favourite.

The album reverts back to its original soft rock charms with the stunning Empty handed. Avalanche has a bit more oomph to it and the album goes out on a high with better on your own. The vocals are to die for.
