Khaen playing revolves around 4/4 timing. You can use different breathing and tonguing styles or even combine them. It is important to use the word "doodle" to describe the phonetic sound your tongue is making while breathing in the khaen. When learning woodwind or even brass instruments in the western way, the letter "t" or "k" is used such as "ta" "taka" etc. The "t" sound makes it very classical stacatto sounding. WIth Thai and Lao Folk music, the letter "d" is more fitting since the music is more like bluegrass or even jazz like. It also will make your tongue more loose. Just think of a banjo. Try to make your tongue move like the fingers/pic of a banjo player.

This free khaen lesson explains briefly on how to use the tonguing and the breathing with the khaen. If you want to learn more, email jonnyplayskhaen@gmail.com Jonny Olsen หมอแคน Khaen Master.
