Sunday, January 19, 2014, the morning after their performance at the Port-au-Prince International Jazz Festival, Maryse Dejean and I sat down with the six members of the Willerm Delisfort Grouo--Willerm, composer and pianist; Sarah Elizabeth Charles, singer; Marquise Hill on trumpet; Christopher McBride on alto saxophone, and Jonathan Michel on acoustic bass.
They were as engaging and committed as their performance the night before.
They're a great, new group, as you may find in the videos of Willerm's "Without A Home" and Sarah's arrangement of the Haitian folk-song "Wangol o" that beautiful
Saturday night on the stage of Cannes Sucre in Port-au-Prince's Parc Historique.
The resourceful editing-unto-creation of Maryse's and my interviews with the WDG, Parts One and Two, owes to Aristide Phillips, just 21 years old and already so accomplished.
A note about the footage of the interview: Oops! Somehow our primary video of the
session got lost in its transfer from my iPad to a jump-drive. This we have only Maryse's footage with Zoom camera for the visual record. But--to make a + from a minus--the extreme close-ups of Willerm, Anwar, Christopher, Jonathan, Marquise, and
Sarah are unusually revealing and appealing, I think. Everyone in the WDG is so intelligent, sincere, and good-humored.
' "The Great Thing" ' title comes from something Sarah says: "The great thing about this particular group that Will 's put together is ..." You'll get it.
