JON JOHNSON - Split - Video
PUBLISHED:  Mar 02, 2017
DESCRIPTION:
This is the other half of Bummer Tape's upcoming split release, set to be accompanied by the newly-established Nick Normal. It's a project put together by, well, "Jon Johnson" -- it's in the name, folks --, who's previously played in Portland's Marcy's Band (https://marcysband.bandcamp.com/) and Wave Action (https://waveaction.bandcamp.com/). Due to the varied, experimental nature of this tape's sounds, all of which seeming distanced from the sort of material I'd typically share, I initially intended to only share Nik's half of the split and leave it at that. But on repeated listens of Jon's seven-track debut tape, I gradually came to the realization that, A), it'd be best for me to cover all my bases and share both halves of the split, and B), there are a few moments on this tape that genuinely sit well with me. Songs such as "With You" and "Lightbulb (For Alex)", as hamhanded as its sugariness may be, still accomplishes what any good, low-energy bubblegum melody should: makes you feel real, real, real good. And as quirky as "Lit" and "Monkeys Eat Cheap" may be, I still think there's something oddly endearing about their funky, disjointed delivery, with the latter cementing the encompassing "no wave" feel of this EP. I don't expect this EP to jive with everyone, but I still think it's very much worth a share.
