Originally from Bristol, England and now based in Bern, Switzerland Volk was one of the first musicians signed to Invada Records, headed by Portishead's Geoff Barrow, and has had over 13 releases on the label. He's also a composer, having written scores for independent European and British short films. He has had his material used by the BBC, HBO and National Geographic.

In February 2016 his new album 'Happenings and Killings' will be released on Glitterhouse. Volk worked closely with the Emmy nominated composer Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow, with both credited as additional producers along with Volk. The spectrum of the album is broad, ranging from low-fi acoustic pieces featuring subtle analogue electronics to more realised tracks, layered with drums, bass, synths and Volk's harmonies and intricate guitar work.

Joe Volk was the original singer and lyricist in the British Progressive Post-Rock band Crippled Black Phoenix, who appeared amongst others twice on The Jeffrey Lee Pierce Sessions Project (Glitterhouse Records), and the hard rock band Gonga. After six studio albums, one live album and several EP's, Volk left Crippled Black Phoenix to focus his energy on his solo material.
