Krakow Jewish Culture Festival / ZION80 at Alchemeia / Jessica Lurie - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jul 13, 2013
DESCRIPTION:
Zion80 -- a group made up of brilliant musicians from the New York avant-garde scene, fronted by Jon Madof (Rashamin, Matisyahu) who combine the art of two great 20th-century musical figures, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, "the singing rabbi", and Fela Kuti, the pioneer of afrobeat. This special mix of two completely different musical worlds brings Carlebach's Hasidic melodies alive with the incredible intensity of afrobeat. Mystical and irresistibly danceable at the same time, Zion80 is the essence of 21st-century Jewish music.
