In the chapter The Triple Muse, Graves weaves a wonderful poetic mythology around May Day ... According the Graves' vision, at the foot of Mount Helicon, women-votaries took part in erotic fertility dances about a stone herm. Clearly this has an imagined correlation with the maypole.
