Born and raised in Lexington, KY, Crowe regularly attended Flatt & Scruggs' Kentucky Barn Dance performances and picked up the banjo when he was 13 years old.

Hired out of high school by one of bluegrass' greatest vocalists, Jimmy Martin, to join the Sunny Mountain Boys, JD Crowe went on to form the Kentucky Mountain Boys with Doyle Lawson, Red Allen and Bobby Slone. He would later attract a new generation of bluegrass lovers with the formation of J.D. Crowe and the New South -- which helped launch the careers of Tony Rice, Ricky Skaggs, Jerry Douglas, Keith Whitley, and others.

J.D. Crowe was the recipient of the Trailblazer Award at the Uncle Dave Macon Days in 2013, and after six decades on the road, he has recently decided to retire, again.

Catch one of his last performances on KET's Jubilee.

Members of The New South include
• Rickey Wasson on vocals and guitar
• Dwight McCall on vocals and mandolin
• Kyle Perkins on upright bass
• Matt DeSpain on resonator guitar and vocals
