“The Jazz scene in Frankfurt rapidly widened in the 1950s, attracting musicians from all over Germany and the foreign countries of Europe. As a result, bands appeared who were setting standards.
Formations with Albert Mangelsdorff and Joki Freund created a European version of Cool Jazz, which became famous as ‘Frankfurt Sound’. Local institutions like Jazzkeller, German Jazz Festival, Jazz Ensemble of Hessian Radio and the series ‘Jazz at the botanical gardens’ were giving direction internationally. During those early years of German Jazz Frankfurt definitely played a pioneering role. And from the 1st German Jazz Festival 1953 on, it could justifiably call itself ‘Jazz Capital Of The Republic’.” - Jürgen Schwab: Der Frankfurt Sound (Societätsverlag 2003), p. 83, quote translation by L+R Records

This double cd reflects a clear but of course not complete picture of the past and current Jazz movement in Frankfurt and Rhein-Main region. The selection points out some of the most important musicians and composers of two different eras. Obviously it would take more than two CDs to give you the full spectrum. The featured artists are being associated with the city of Frankfurt due to diverse criteria such as place of residence, local engagements, place of recording and so on.

Special thanks goes out to Jazz Initiative Frankfurt, Jürgen Schwab, as well as Jan Hagenkoetter and his INFRACom! label for inspiration and support. Last but not least we would like to thank all contributing artists and labels for their courtesy.
