Having secured a position in the Pets premier league with his brutal-but-beautiful Right Reason on the labels Friends Will Carry You Home compendium earlier this year, Catz 'N Dogz are proud to present Jay Shepheards first full single release on their label. And what a release it is Two smouldering slabs of unyielding house music that shimmy and shake with muscular musicality, theres universal appeal as the Retrofit label boss references the rich heritage of Detroit, Berlin and New York with consummate ease. High Way takes the lead: A linear synth riff morphs back and forth with a techno-like insistency while a tightly clipped vocal sample creates the perfect balance with euphoric soul. These seemingly contrasting elements are tied together by a thick, sweet syrup like bassline underbelly. The end result? A bulbous late night strut-out that defies any formal categorisations. Won Ton Crystal continues this rich vein of form as rigidly edited vocals and sinewy synth shots bounce off each other with stripped back serendipity. For added melodic firepower pay close attention to the buoyant bassline. Refusing to sit still, it adds an insatiable sense of latent, knowing funk. Two exemplary examples of pure house music from one of the scenes most distinctive, respected producers. These have been a long time coming; Jays studio is right next door to Catz 'N Dogz laboratory! Lets hope they dont leave it so long for the follow up release.
