Part one of a four-part interview with saxophonist Jaleel Shaw from The Jazz Cruise 2013. Shaw was performing with Roy Haynes and the Fountain of Youth group during the cruise. The Philadelphia-born saxophonist spoke with JazzTimes about his first musical instrument, his formal music education, his first paid gig and his teachers and mentors. He also shared his thoughts on how he approaches teaching jazz to his students.
