We thought there must be a better way than bombarding patients with radiation, chemicals or surgery to destroy the good and bad cells, with the hopes of having the good cells recover. This not only puts the patients through a lot of pain and hardship, but there is still a high chance of tumor recurrence or development of a new type of cancer.

We have found a better way.

Our company, PepVax, has taken a therapeutic vaccine approach to the problem. We have found a way to help the human immune system recognize these cells using specific proteins present only cancer cells. This technique is called immunotherapy.

Vaccines: Preventative vs. Therapeutic.

First of all, our vaccines are not what most people think of as vaccines. Usually, people think of vaccines as a way to prevent a disease by priming the immune system to an infectious agent. The smallpox vaccine would be a good example of such a preventative vaccine. The vaccine for the human papilloma virus (HPV) is a significant measure to prevent cervical cancer. However, it is difficult to create preventative vaccines for all cancers since many are not caused by viruses

Our vaccines are therapeutic, as they will be given to patients who have already been diagnosed with cancer. But once they are administered, they will work the same way as other traditional vaccines—by teaching the immune system to destroy a certain target—cancer tumors in this case.

We think we have a cure.

Over the past year, my team and I have dedicated our time to developing vaccine candidates for breast and prostate cancers. Experiments have shown our vaccines to be very effective. But we need to test these vaccines so we can make it available for humans.
