Overview: Fiona Apple returns with a fury on The Idler Wheel.... This latest record shows Apple displaying an extremely varied and eclectic range of emotions and intensities. As always, her songwriting is an absolute strength most notably in her vocal and lyrical parts. There are moments when Apple sounds insane; ready to burst from intense emotion or slam a "hot knife" through an unfaithful lover. This contrasts with the softer more sentimental moments on the record where Apple plays with positive tunes mixed with dark lyrics; a coy way of telling the listener to pay attention. And you should. This is one of the most well written and heady albums of the year.
