Freda Payne's 1970 smash hit "Band of Gold" was composed by the legendary song writing team Holland--Dozier--Holland (under the pseudonym "Edythe Wayne" and Ron Dunbar). When HDH left Motown in 1967 they asked The Funk Brothers (the Motown house band which performed the backing to most Motown Records recordings from 1959 until about 1972) to back Payne. (Ironically Payne was reluctant at first to record the song, finding the material more appropriate for a teenager or very young woman). Almost immediately following its release the Payne record became an instant pop smash, reaching #3 in the US and hitting #1 on the UK singles chart and remaining there for six weeks in September 1970, giving Payne her first gold record. In 2004, Payne's "Band of Gold" was voted number 391 in Rolling Stone magazine's listing of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The Funk Brothers (who played on this Freda Payne recording) included Bob Babbitt, bass; Dennis Coffey, Eddie Willis, and Ray Monette, guitar; Johnny Griffth, keyboards; Uriel Jones, drums; and Jack Ashford, other percussion.
-----------------------------------------------
