Brauns & Wagner, 'Jazz Hustle (Abe Duque Remix)' on SOUNDZ - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jun 08, 2010
DESCRIPTION:
Hamburg is bursting with raw natural talent for underground house music. One great producer after the next pops up and creates a stir in the world of tech and deep house. So, on recommendation from fellow hamburgers Kruse & Nurnberg, the duo of Holger Brauns & Tim Wagner were signed to SOUNDZ.

Their first release on the label, the 'Chapter HH EP' was a success and grabbed the attention of the top level DJs in this genre, setting them up to conquer the underground with 'Jazz Hustle'. The original contains a myriad of elements from a long list of obscure jazz recordings to create the base of the track, painfully extracted with tweezers from their analogue crackling originals, but the hard work pays off. The track takes on an almost experimental vibe as it gets more entangled in the complicated sample puzzle, but is held together tightly by a rumbling bassline and rough dirty kick drum.

The track caught the attention of the legendary Abe Duque who, while preparing for an exclusive mix-compilation this summer, offered to take some time out of his busy touring schedule and remix the track. The result is mind-blowing.

Since his days as the keyboardist for the techno super-group Program2 in the 90s and starting the groundbreaking Tension label in 1993, Abe's eyes and ears have been constantly aimed forward, determined to break boundaries. And that's exactly what he's doing here. Despite the fact his dad was an evangelical minister in the church where young Abe eventually cut his teeth playing keyboards, in ways of his production style.... nothing's holy!

With releases on labels such as Tresor, Disko-B, Gigolo, Tension, Mille Plateaux and of course his own Abe Duque Records it's hard to argue with his authority in this genre of music, and using his trademark style of never returning to the same point in a mix, constantly evolving throughout the track, keeping us waiting for what's going to come next, much like experimental jazz.

Abe Duque is a master of this style, effortlessly blending Acid-house basslines and Detroit house strings with straight up dance-floor functionality and techno mentality that is his origins, and he doesn't hold back. Instead he rolls out every weapon in his arsenal to expertly capture the freestyle experimental jazz vibe within his twisted programming patterns to make this remix memorable and interesting all the way from start until the end.

Abe's mad techno sets at Tresor are perfectly offset with his deeper acid tech-house sets, and you can hear this track is made with his own DJing in mind. Anyone that's caught him DJ will testify to that, it fits perfectly, or rather, it doesn't fit at all, just the way he likes it. The element of surprise is ever-present.

Abe is an intensively versatile artist, a pioneer in many ways, a producer for producers, the titles he's been given over the years are many, and he continues to impress his peers and clubbers alike with his remarkably refined and unique musical madness.
