Two tracks, 12 minutes. It's only what The Haxan Cloak needs to inspire the occult fascination of fear.

Abyssal low frequencies blasting from the depths of the psyche, a claustrophobic sound design and a wonderful use of sonic contrast throughout the whole piece. Excavation is certainly not for the faint of heart, but will unfurl a black lotus flowers of sap made of liquid coal to those who wish to keep going down. A dangerous beauty waiting for our senses to be dulled to capture our soul and torment it for the eternity. That's why you should approach this album with extreme caution, as it won't leave you a chance to escape it when you realize it is too late.

Because there is a point where you will stop to play it, where you will need to stop it, when your fascination of fear is starting to get out of control and overrides your last defense mechanisms. And if you don't pay attention, the demonic vocals scattered through Excavation will find a way to talk to you, to keep you prisoner in this place where they can feed from your soul.

But being cautious will allow you to experience a top-notch dark ambient album carved in the blackest obsidians, cleverly using volume and frequential splits to set a tense climate, and leading to the true appreciation of reaching the light and the heat again.
