Hassanah

Born Nwanne Hassanah Grace Iroegbu, chanteuse and songwriter Hassanah spent her early years in the city of Jos, Nigeria and in a village in the East called Umunkiri. as the daughter of an African father and an American born Native American/German mother, She was exposed to musical influences from all over the world. She attended high school in New Zealand where she learned traditional Polynesian cultural arts, traveling and winning awards in the US, Italy and Sicily for Polynesian song and dance while establishing a name for herself in the New Zealand music scene as an outstanding vocalist and dancer. From a very young age Hassanah showed musical promise. She had a special gift for melody and song. Singing in whatever venue she could find from talent shows to community events, she went on to win many awards and recognitions for her talents, the first being the New Zealand Music Award for most promising new artist. After high school she returned to the United States, and continued her musical development in Hawaii, North Carolina and New York. After two years of studying Jazz theory at North Carolina Central University, Hassanah left for New York to pursue her musical career. She started out recording and performing with local hip- hop producers and singing back-up with a variety of Reggae and African musicians. It wasnt long before she moved up from the background, performing her original songs. Her unique urban/reggae and Jazz influenced style as well as angelic vocal style and elegant beauty left audiences captivated. Most recently Hassanah received the Diesel U Music award for her Song New Freedom produced by Greenhouse studios. In the Florida reggae scene she has gained a reputation as a must see performer, frequently doing shows with the top bands and sharing the stage with Reggae greats. As a testament to her versatile talent she has even released several songs in Barbados for the carnival season. Her music is a favorite of DJs and producers in the new urban soul movement from Atlanta, New York, Miami and as far as off as Germany. At 28, Hassanah is a prolific singer/songwriter and a unique artist whose accomplishments continue to grow along with her fan base. Her song Runaway released in New Zealand has received glowing reviews and her song Feel won her a New Zealand on Air Arts Council grant to produce an additional single as well as a grant to produce a video this year. She is the only artist to receive both grants in the same year from the New Zealand Arts Council. Currently she is recording her soon to be released Album ‘Heaven and Earth’
