Snuff Harlow Square 1991 - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jun 10, 2015
DESCRIPTION:
This gig was one of the last UK Snuff gigs. Support was from Wat Tyler, a video of that band's performance exists here at Penguin Towers so I will upload that soon. After this Harlow performance Snuff travelled abroad, and after the return the band played a massive gig at Kilburn National. Kilburn being local to where the band members were born and breed. A fitting end. Back to Harlow. The Square was one of my favourite venues, and Harlow was local to where I spent my formative years. In 1991 the venue had cameras set up to record each band that performed on the stage. I have no idea how I ended up with a first generation copy. I assume that I asked the venue to give me one. Anyhow, perfect camera angles, perfect lighting, perfect sound desk audio. That's all good. The thing is Snuff by this time although still wonderful people and a great night out were getting a little bit gimmicky with all the cover versions and jokey adverts. Early 1988 thought 1989 were my favorite years for the band. I witnessed dozens of performances in all the 'normal' venues. The White Horse in Hampstead, Sir George Robey in Finsbury Park, Canterbury Arms in Brixton and the Bull And Gate in Kentish Town. Saw the band many times in many other different venues, including San Francisco when I was out there and staying at Tim Yo's Maximum Rock And Roll house. Snuff (and Giggs from... well loads of bands) turned up at Tim Yo's club Epicentre in the afternoon of the gig and the band were more than surprised to see me and my travelling partner Karen there! Anyway, the point is; The video is probably the best you will witness and hear due to the quality of the visual and audio. Lot's of energy from the crowd (I stage dive several times in this video - white hooded top and green army trousers) but the performance has too many gimmicky songs in the set. The original songs written by the band would stand up in their own right. This is just my opinion. Enjoy the video as it is very good. Don't be put off by my gripes. Another note. Harlow Square still served alcohol in original bottles at this point. During Wat Tylers performance for some reason, someone stage dived (Wat Tyler were not THAT kind of band) just as I had the bottle in my mouth. Crack, broken bottle, blood in mouth, no harm done, live and learn.
