Si Spex presents "Way of the Axe" A Sampled tribute to David Axelrod - Video
PUBLISHED:  Feb 17, 2017
DESCRIPTION:
On hearing the sad news of David Axelrod´s passing (Feb 5th 2017) , Si Spex (Half cousin of Cornish Rhythm Roulette contestent, Barry Beats) felt an overwhelming compulsion to hit the studio and lay down a musical homage to the great man.

But with such an insanely awesome back catalogue, where to start? It had to represent the epic power of Axelrod´s music while maintaining its inherent funkiness. Overwhelmed with possible sample directions Si decided to go straight to one of, if not, his all time favourite Axelrod track, The Fly lifted from his second studio album, Songs of Experience. In particular the Don Randi Roksichord keyboard sections always blew Sis socks off so in it all went for sample surgery. Combined with rolling drums courtesy of Axelrods 1000 Rads layered with some 1950s Sarah Vaughan and a sheffield drum library the track was starting to come together. Si then managed to interweave and ´cross pollinate´a few other Axelrod elements to complete the picture.
Since working on the Def Star mix and the Barry Roulette Si has found a whole new creative avenue to explore, that of video editing. He therefore decided to knock up a little video accompaniment to the track. As well as some amazing stills plucked from Axelrods official website The video also utilises elements from his one and only live solo performance at the Royal festival Hall that Si was very privileged to have witnessed first hand.
So sit back and I hope you enjoy this heart felt tribute to one of the greatest music people to ever grace the innards of a digital sampler.
