Wera Szczucka (Weronika Kuźmińska) & The Gypsy Choir dir. by A. Sawin - Zielone Oczy (Ah Gypsy Girl, Your Green Eyes...) Romans cygański (A Gypsy Romance) Melodje 1948 (Polish)

NOTE: Wera SZCZUCKA (Weronika Kuźmińska) was a singer in Stefan Jaracz Theatre in Łódź, after 1945. She had her debut in early postwar months, and soon she became the primadonna of the operatic stage of Łódź. For her recordings in a lighter repertoire, she however used her maiden name of Wera Szczucka. This lovely recording of the old Gypsy romance was made by her in 1948 in the last months of existence of first postwar Polish recording manufacture Melodje. Located in the city of Poznań - and often using its sister name of Mewa - Melodje records played an incredibly large role in the revival of Polish popular music after the disaster of the 2nd World War. This small private company recorded the whole array of excellent post-war debutantes such as Tadeusz Miller, Halina Kowalewska, Zenon Jaruga, Marta Mirska, paving the way for their more appreciable career. Here, their first discs recorded also Polish revived dance and jazz orchestras, like the bands of Brothers Łopatowski, Kazimierz Bryzek, Charles Bowery or Mieczyslaw Paszkiet. In addition, the owner of the label - the engineer inżynier Mieczyslaw Wajman - managed to save a lot of of original prewar matrixes Odeon and Syrena Electro, pressing them again under his new labels. Sometimes - to hide the "burgeois" ID of certan prewar artist, he masked them under the new nicknames (like the orchestra of prewar Warsaw Gendarmerie). Unfortunately, the Stalinist regime, which started its devastating activity in postwar Poland in full swing after the fake nationwide "election" in 1948, did not spare this great company, which soon disbanded.
