Song: Chant by Dr. Donald Byrd

A tribute memorial On Monday, May 6, 2013, Benjamin Urreta, in association with St. Peter's Church, presented "THE DR. DONALD BYRD MEMORIAL CONCERT" honoring Dr. Donald Byrd, one of our true, great Jazz Musicians, at St. Peter's Church, 619 Lexington Avenue @53rd St., from 7:00Pm to 10:30PM. Doors open at 6:30PM. Sponsored by the Jay Herman Fund. The concert is free and open to the public.

Trumpeter and educator, Donald Byrd, died Feb. 4, 2013 in Dover, Delaware. Byrd was 80. Donaldson Toussaint L'Ouverture Byrd played music based on bebop in the '50s, then Hard Bop, funk-fusion and R&B in the '70s. Soon after that, his music found its way into hip-hop. But no matter what style he was playing, Byrd was a teacher. "He was a very lyrical, economical, and thoughtful player with a beautiful sound," says Nicholas Payton, a contemporary trumpet player.
