http://YouTube.com/SXSWLawnParty The DIY torch carried by proto post-punk women like the Raincoats and Scrawl burns bright with Grass Widow.
This San Francisco-based trio's Kill Rock Star-released Past Time was a shop favorite at Other Music last year, finding a well-deserved place in our Best of 2010 Albums list. When we heard that Grass Widow were coming through SXSW, we immediately booked them for Friday, knowing that their breezy yet slightly melancholic songs, filled with three-part harmonies and spindly, interwoven guitar and bass lines, would be the perfect follow-up to the churning, atmospheric rock of Lower Dens, who played on the Hill Stage before them. Sure enough, Hannah Lew, Lillian Maring and Raven Mahon offered a short but sweet set, featuring numbers off their last record, a gorgeously lulling cover of Wire's classic "Mannequin," and this new song, which is reportedly inspired by the unsolicited rock'n'roll "Advice" these women have received from suspect sources, as if they really even needed any.
