DESCRIPTION:
Vidar Skrede recently moved to Chicago from Norway. It’s been a delight hearing him play around town. He won first place at the 2016 Midwest Fiddle Championship, which I directed. Since then, we’ve had the chance to play some music together. Vidar tells me that this tune is after Trygve Thomasson Fuglestad (1902-1982) from Bjerkreim, in Rogaland County in the southwest of Norway. Trygve was a teacher in Bjerkreim, and was the youngest of three brothers who all played the fiddle. The two others were Ivar Thomasson Fuglestad and Georg Thomasson Fuglestad. Georg was the oldest of the three brothers. He spent some time in America, bringing his fiddle along and back to Norway. The halling dance in Rogaland relates to the gangar dance in Telemark and Setesdal, and so do many of the tunes, though maybe in an older and more "minimalistic" form.

Vidar learned this tune from Siri Dyvik, his first harding fiddle teacher back home in Haugesund.
