GABRIELE COEN
(composition, saxophones, clarinets)
Born in Rome in 1970, Gabriele Coen graduated in saxophone at the “Conservatorio Morlacchi" in Perugia and specialized in "Jazz and contemporary derivations" at the "Siena Jazz Association". MA graduated in Political Science at the “Università La Sapienza” in Rome with a thesis on the “Jewish influence in the creation of Spanish modern identity”.
He deepened his musical studies with Roberto Mancini, Eugenio Colombo, Yvonne Fisher, Gianni Oddi, Mario Raja, Pasquale Laino and attended several stages and workshops by Dave Liebman, Steve Lacy, Kenny Wheeler, Siena Jazz with Paolo Fresu and Pietro Tonolo, Ials with Gianni Oddi and Orchestra Romana with Bruno Tommaso, composition studies with Giovanni Guaccero.
Founder of Klezroym, Italian klezmer lead band, performing over 300 concerts in Italy and abroad and publishing 4 albums that sold more than 50.000 copies: “Klezroym” 1998, “Scenì” 2000, “Yankele nel Ghetto”, 2002 “Klezroym”, 2003.
Writer, with Isotta Toso, of “Klezmer! Jewish music from the shtetl to John Zorn”, first Italian essay on history of klezmer music, published by Castelvecchi Edt. in 2000.
Since 1996 teacher of klezmer music at the “Pitigliani-Italian Jewish Center”.
In 2001 he founded the jazz quartet “Atlante Sonoro” a project that melts jazz language with ethnic music, publishing the album “Duende” in 2004 and “Alhambra” in 2006.
Composer and performer in several TV and radio shows: “Dove osano le quaglie” (Raitre) Orchestra "Novecento" directed by Pippo Caruso (Raitre), “Maurizio Costanzo Show” (Canale 5), “Il Tappeto Volante” (TMC), “Mattinotre”, “Radiotresuite”, “Music Club” (Radiorai).
Composer of TV signature tunes (“Il Grillo”, Rai Educational) and TV themes (“Geo&Geo”, La grande Storia, Sorgente di vita”, Raitre).
Composer and performer in theatre plays by Celestini, Scaparro, Mincer, Natoli.
Composer and performer in soundtracks for films (1998 “Once We Were Strangers” by Emanuele Crialese, 2005 “A Gennaio” by Luca Calvanelli and 2007 “Notturno bus” by Davide Marengo) and short films (1994 “Burattini”, by Stefano Landini).
Performer in several cinema and TV soundtracks by Pivio and Aldo Scalzi.
GABRIELE COEN
Sassofonista, clarinettista, compositore
Si diploma in sassofono presso il Conservatorio "Morlacchi" di Perugia e in "Specializzazione professionale di musica jazz e derivazioni contemporanee", presso l'Associazione "Siena Jazz". Partecipa a stage e seminari di Dave Liebman, Steve Lacy, Ials con Gianni Oddi e Orchestra Romana di Bruno Tommaso. E' tra i fondatori del gruppo Klezroym con cui ha inciso cinque dischi e ha svolto oltre 400 concerti in tutta Italia e anche all'estero, eseguendo spesso proprie composizioni.
Dal 1996 collabora assiduamente con I Solisti di Roma con cui propone un inedito incontro tra sassofono e quartetto d'archi, eseguendo spesso prime assolute (D.Nicolau, F. Cifariello Ciardi, M.Coen).
Nel 2001 ha dato vita al gruppo "Gabriele Coen Atlante Sonoro" con cui fonde il linguaggio jazzistico con la musica etnica, registrando nel 2004 l'album di esordio, "Duende" e successivamente "Alhambra" (2006). Composizioni di sigle televisive (Rai Educational) commenti musicali (Geo&Geo, Raitre), Musiche per documentari (La grande Storia, Raitre) e per balletti (Patino, Fuciarelli), numerose collaborazioni teatrali (Mincer, Celestini, Scaparro, Natoli).
Dal 2004 ha attivato altre collaborazioni: Piccola Banda Ikona, Lutte Berg, Alessandro Gwis, Elisabetta Antonini, Raffaela Siniscalchi, Giovanni Palombo etc. etc.
In questi mesi è impegnato come compositore ed esecutore, insieme a Mario Rivera, nella realizzazione della colonna sonora del film NOTTURNO BUS di davide Marengo, con Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Valerio Mastandrea e Ennio Fantastichini.
