mixtapes 03 - 13 will be posted weekly on mixcloud.

live recording off mixerboard to cassette.

from an era before the internet.

originally broadcast friday nights across niagara region on b-rock radio 103.7 midnight - 4am

live show using the entire vinyl library of a small town community radio station + whatever dollar bin records i found that week in st.catharines or toronto.

2 turntables & mixer, often with random record selection.
occasional samples from vcr.

no beat counters, mp3s, traktor, ableton, fx, pedals or slaptops involved. final scratch wasn't invented yet.

funkspiel means 'radio games' in german. it aired weekly for the better part of a year and only ever had 2 callers. one said 'stop messing with me', the other 'just wow, man'.

these mixtapes were recorded haphazardly, and the first & last show weren't recorded.

the actual first episode was a 2 hour lecture on the history of radio, that was waay deeper than marconi as i was doing a research degree at the time. india.

the show ended it's run with a giant audio experiment of a house party streaming to an answering machine.
3 bands played in different rooms and party-goers would pick the phones up or down on different floors of the house to remix the audio.

have some photos of that, but never found the audio.

in the 90's indie radio used to be almost the only way you heard about music that wasn't top 40 schlock. no napster, myspace, soundcloud, etc.

mixtapes from your friends was the other.

this show was originally conceived as a kind of public consciousness shared mixtape of the soundtrack of everyone's friday night, played simultaneously.
& then the dreams of people as they fell asleep after being out galavanting.

public radio was a deep tradition back then & there were tons of
characters @ the station at the time, from nudist dj's
to conspiracy nuts to psychedelic hippie grandmas.

look up your local station & go get involved !

shout out's to my crew back in the day :lord open, dj voltaire, dj osamu & djester.
