About Erik XIV: Erik XIV (1533–1577) was King of Sweden from 1560 until he was deposed in 1568. He has been regarded as intelligent and artistically skilled, as well as politically ambitious, early in his reign he showed signs of mental instability, a condition that eventually led to insanity. This short renaissance piece was composed during his imprisonment.

About the CD: During the Vasa dynasty culture and music flourished at the Swedish court. Players from abroad came to the royal court, bringing with them music from the continent - from the latest exhilarating dances to the solemn motet that was heard at the funeral of Gustav Vasa.
