Going South. The story behind the song.

It's mid-July 1973 and like many other northerners, the Murphy family is going south for the summer holiday.

We are headed to the Disneyland of Ireland at the time - Butlin's Mosney.

There are five kids crammed into the back of a Vauxhall Victor Estate - one of us in the boot, not a seat-belt in sight, and Mum and Dad are just about to light up for the journey.

Today they'd be behind bars and we'd be in social care ... but it's all perfectly normal. It's the 1970s!

The only obstacle between us and Europe's coldest outdoor swimming pool is the border checkpoint on our doorstep in Newry, on the main Belfast to Dublin road.

There's an endless queue of vehicles leading up to the checkpoint and the radio is our only welcome distraction.

The DJ announces his next choice. It's a song by the band Mungo Jerry - it's called In The Summertime.

The rhythm kicks in, a strange mixture of shakers and vocal grunts.

The Murphy kids are instantly hooked.

Suddenly we're not bothered by the soldiers crouching in bushes, by the sweltering heat or by the fact that we are going nowhere fast.

Our all-time favourite summer song has just announced itself for the very first time.

We did finally make it to Butlin's, and luckily for us, Dad brought his cine camera.

Many years later, his footage wound up in this video for Going South, taken from our latest album, Sugar Island.
