Prokofiev: Classical Symphony No. 1 (Allegro) - Video
PUBLISHED:  Jun 24, 2017
DESCRIPTION:
Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev 1891 –1953. Soviet composer, pianist and conductor. As the creator of acknowledged masterpieces across numerous musical genres, he is regarded as one of the major composers of the 20th century. His works include such widely heard works as the March from The Love for Three Oranges, the suite Lieutenant Kijé, the ballet Romeo and Juliet – from which "Dance of the Knights" is taken – and Peter and the Wolf. Of the established forms and genres in which he worked, he created – seven completed operas, seven symphonies, eight ballets, five piano concertos, two violin concertos, a cello concerto, a Symphony-Concerto for cello and orchestra, and nine completed piano sonatas.
On this video:- his Symphony No. 1 in D major was completed in 1917, It is written in loose imitation of the style of Haydn (and to a lesser extent, Mozart), and is widely known as the Classical Symphony, a name given to it by the composer. It premiered on April 21, 1918 in Petrograd, conducted by Prokofiev himself, and has become one of his most popular and beloved works.
Some of you may recall the long running Independent Television serial 'The Flaxton Boys', of which this was the closing signature tune. The series was set in different eras, spanning the years 1854 to 1945.
It set in the West Riding of Yorkshire and covering a timespan of almost a century. The series was made by Yorkshire Television and was broadcast between 1969 and 1973, running for 4 series and 52 episodes, each of 30 minutes duration.
Of the whole series I remember this music most vividly with black and white images of the young Flaxton Boys running across a meadow in front of their stately pile.
Enjoy the stately homes, gardens and palaces on this video. Featuring 'Castle Howard' in Yorkshire and Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, England.
