DESCRIPTION:
Singer/keyboardist Todd Fletcher fronted the D.I.Y. indie pop band Twiggy in the mid-'90s, releasing a pair of EPs on the Champaign-Urbana, IL-based musician's local indie Parasol Records. After Twiggy split up, Fletcher woodshedded for a few years, producing or playing keyboards for everyone from U.K. indie legend Nikki Sudden to emo mainstays Very Secretary, before forming the inexplicably named June and the Exit Wounds. Although drummer Brendan Gamble and bassist Eddie Schaller play on the entirety of June and the Exit Wounds' 1998 debut, "a little more Haven Hamilton, please" (an obscure reference to the reactionary country singer Henry Gibson played in Robert Altman's classic Nashville), the D.I.Y. project is otherwise almost entirely a solo project, with Fletcher singing the vast majority of the vocals and playing all of the keyboards and all but two tracks' worth of guitar. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the album sounds more than a little like Todd Rundgren's Something/Anything? period, although Fletcher's Carl Wilson-like falsetto adds a Beach Boys-like element as well. Fletcher began recording a follow-up in 2001. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi
